CandyBird

Discovered an awesome illustrator the other day, her name is Candybird and she’s been working since 2008 as an independent illustrator. Unfortunately she’s based in France so it’s not easy to get her prints locally.  I did find her on click for art though, a UK based site that sells art and does global shipping. They also have some other cool designers, such as Joe Ledbetter, a favourite of mine.

Space Invaders

Awhile ago I painted some canvasses for an IT friend which were inspired by the old ‘Space Invaders’ arcade game, developed by Nishikado. This was an iconic game and one feature was the way the graphics speeded up as you shot down alien ships. This was apparently a glitch caused by the way the computer could render graphics more quickly when the number of ships on screen it had to calculate decreased. While researching the art piece I bumped into this trendy couch which I would love to have!

This Space Invader Couch is the work of designer Igor Chak, and is sadly not in production yet. The couch is all leather, with two glass surfaces. It’s also really soft as it’s mainly lined and made with memory foam.
I also found these funky chairs, although I’ve forgotten who made them. The colours are awesome but I feel like these are more like large sculptures since they don’t look as comfortable as Igor’s couch.

Coffee festival at Biscuit Mill

Just saw that there is a coffee festival at the Biscuit Mill this weekend! How exciting. I'm not an avid coffee drinker, more tea please, but my boy and some friends are. So thinking about checking this out! Will need to confine it to an espresso though since I am dashing off to join some friends in stellenboush for a wine festival after. Always busy in Cape Town :)

Paper deer

Whilst looking for stag heads I also stumbled upon this cute little deer made of paper. The designer is Macula and he has tons of paper toys on his site. You can download all the templates for free and he has the necessary tutorials to show you how to assemble these as well J

Doodle Shoes

Love these awesome new VANS and the idea of customizing your shoes!. Thinking about getting a pair of canvas sneakers this weekend and marking them myself. Cant be so hard, just need to pick-up some water-proof fabric paint (you can even get that in convenient thin-tip applicators nowadays). Aaaah a to-do project, I’ll add it to my list J

Stag head

Celebrated Christmas in July this weekend since one can always use any excuse to throw together some friends and wine. As part of the decor I decided to make a stag head out of paper, I think he turned out rather well and am thinking to maybe make a slightly larger and coloured version for the flat.

Drop me a line if you want a copy of the CAD template. Or if you feel your not up to making one yourself check out local designer Joanna:

Bicycles

In honor of a good friend who's crazy about bikes and loves to zip around Cape Town on her gorgeous pale yellow bike with purple rims. How she does it in the heavy traffic is amazing!

I still need to tag her bike as I promised ages ago (sorry G). Maybe I can paint her a bike inspired piece like these instead.

Shine shine fabric

Went fabric shopping on friday afternoon with a friend. After the usual Fabric stores on Sir Lowry we decided to head over to Bo-kaap to check out the Shine Shine store since they are having a sale.

Love their bold prints and have bought myself some fabric now (R75/m! you cant get much better than that).

Here are some pics of their work. Owner says she is not going to make any more fabric so you need to snap up the last bits quick!

Check out aal their products on: http://www.shineshine.co.za/

Decorating the flat

After a couple of months living in his place and after promising to not introduce any more bunnies into the flat (yay! Fuzzy buns!) Ive finally received the décor go ahead from my beau. This has gotten me all excited about all the cool stuff out there! Ive spent some time trawling other décor blogs and design sites and this is where I want to collect all the cool stuff Ive found. In turn Im also discovering loads of cool shops and places in my new habitat… stunning Cape Town!

At the moment I am looking for the perfect side drawer thingy. Ive been quite inspired by the wood/paint combo and would love any of these:

A couple of shops Ive found:

Vamp furniture in woodstock: http://vampfurniture.blogspot.com/

Saks corner in Observatory: http://www.sakscorner.co.za/

I especially liked Saks corner! The owner is pretty laid back and willing to discuss what you want. Bought a chair off him and get to choose my own fabric to upholster it with (will post pic of chair when finished!). Now to go fabric shopping!
